Further decline in the population of Saint Martin

Over the past year, Saint Martin has lost 516 inhabitants according to latest figures by INSEE (French National Institute for Statistics and Economic Research) published in the Official Journal on December 30th.

As of January 1st, 2017, the total official population on the French side thus totaled 35,941 inhabitants, as compared with 36,457 a year earlier.

It has been four years now that a decline is recorded. Since 2013, the number of inhabitants fell by 4.38%.

Since 2009, it has not dropped below 36,000.

However, considered over a longer period, the population is having a significant increase. Since the census of 1999, it has increased by more than a quarter.

It should be noted that it is however the legal population, that is to say, are taken into account by these data, only residents recorded in the census with an official residence on the French side.

Note that the census will be held this year from January 19 to February 25.
