Motor vehicle larceny, a quad to boot

The gendarmes advise people to be vigilant and to keep their belongings out of sight on the beach.

Galion Beach, Monday at midday, the tourists were swimming. Two individuals took advantage of their absence on the sand to steal their belongings. They got away on a scooter. In the water, the tourists are helpless. However, they received the assistance of another tourist who was on the beach and who witnessed the scene. This person jumped on his quad and began to chase the thieves.

But the thieves cunningly took a dirt path and disappeared quickly from the sight of the quad driver which continued along the main road until he was finally intercepted by the said individuals. They threatened him to give them the vehicle. He acceded. The two individuals, therefore, took off with the personal belongings that they had stolen on the beach and the quad which had been rented. The gendarmes have launched an investigation.

Even if the driver of the quad meant well by wanting to catch up with the thieves, he could have been injured. Given that some individuals can become violent in their reactions and the high probability that they are carrying a weapon, the gendarmes strongly recommend that people should not attempt to stop thieves. Except in exceptional situations, as was the case during a supermarket robbery or the burglary of a house in which the culprits were trapped by their victims.

Also, the local population and tourists are reminded to be vigilant and to not their personal belongings in sight and unattended.
