Video Surveillance: The COM will install 80 cameras by 2028

Destroyed during Hurricane Irma, the video surveillance camera network is currently being reinstalled. The Collectivité plans to install 80 cameras throughout the territory, with a projected budget of 4 million euros. The project has received prefectural approval and is currently the subject of a funding request to the national government through the Interministerial Fund for Crime Prevention (FIPD).
The Collectivité’s goal is to install the cameras in two phases: first, 61 in 2026–2027, followed by 19 in 2027–2028.
The earthwork required for the deployment of fiber-optic cables is already underway, in coordination with the renovation of the streetlight network. The cameras will be installed on public roads in Marigot, Concordia, Grand-Case, Sandy Ground/Baie Nettlé, Belle Plaine, Oyster Pond, Terres-Basses, Bellevue, Quartier d’Orléans, Cul-de-Sac, and Cripple Gate/Colombier.

“Video surveillance is an indispensable tool in the fight against crime. It aims to strengthen public safety, protect public facilities, prevent crime, ensure the safety of traffic routes, and support law enforcement agencies in their prevention and investigative efforts,” states the COM.

Work to install the first cameras will begin shortly. The local government also plans to rebuild the Urban Surveillance Center (CSU) at its original location (the Semsamar building).
