SXM does something Special

The Special Olympics St. Maarten athletes successfully competed in the St. Kitts National Games over the weekend (March 24th to 26th), winning medals in their selected category. For the first time, Special Olympics participated in the St. Kitts – Nevis cross-channel swim meet. This is a 4 Kilometer relay swim, making it a historic moment for Special Olympics St. Maarten.

The precision of both the male and female athletes in bocce won St. Maarten gold in all categories except the men’s single, where the silver medal was won in a nail biting tie breaker.

The 2017 St. Kitts National Games marks the second-time St. Maarten has competed with countries such as Cayman Islands, Connecticut, St. Kitts and Nevis. The sister islands of St. Kitts and Nevis each have their own Special Olympic organization and athletes.

Special Olympics St. Maarten would like to thank Winair, the Government of St. Maarten and the St. Maarten Tourist Bureau for helping to make the games possible. We would also like to thank St. Kitts and Nevis for their hospitality. A special thanks to the coaches and the hard-working athletes who made us all very proud.
